Cubic boron nitride (cBN) has high thermal conductivity and high hardness second only to diamond, and is relatively inert with respect to ferrous materials. Consequently, PCBN (polycrystalline cBN) compacts, fabricated by sintering cBN powder with binder materials, has been used as tools for cutting cast iron and hardened steel mainly in automobile industries. In recent years, in response to trends in automotive parts industries, there is a growing need for high efficiency machining of iron and hardened steel. The new technologies, the improvement of PCBN compacts and the new tool design, increase the machining efficiency remarkably.
