Producing internal threads is a troublesome, time-consuming process. This paper provides an overview of the fundamentals of producing internal screw threads, including case studies, new developments, and future trends. Threading information is given on tapping, high-speed tapping (up to 326 SFM), high-speed thread milling, and high-speed thrilling. Topics covered are the design characteristics of taps, full-speed taps, thread milling cutters, and thrillers and their advantages/disadvantages in producing internal screw threads. Parameters that influence tool selection, such as material to be machined, part configuration, machine selection, and production time reduction, are discussed.
