This paper is a case study surrounding fundamentals of softening and the evolutionary process of designing a micro finishing tool suitable for production finishing hard turned steel pinion I.D.'s. The process covers silicon carbide and PCD as abrasive used to improve surface structure. Abrasive tool tests are supported with SEM photographs and profile data.
