Experimental investigations of surface grinding processes on hard and brittle materials, such as advanced ceramics, show that process behavior and work result are influenced by the grinding wheel hub. This can be attributed to changes of the material removal mechanisms due to the dynamic conditions in the contact zone which are affected by the hub. By means of dynamic and thermal finite element simulations with varying properties of the grinding wheel hub, the hub can be adapted to meet the requirements of a determined grinding process with regard to tool wear, surface quality of the workpiece and process forces.
