AS THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINES IMPROVE, THE ERROR CAUSED BY PROBE LOBING (INHERENT IN TOUCH TRIGGER PROBE DESIGN) HAS BECOME A SIGNIFICANT COMPONENT OF THE TOTAL SYSTEM ERROR. THIS PAPER ADDRESSES THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE BY COMPARING THE LOBING ERRORS OF EACH OF THE DIFFERENT PROBE MODELS AND THEN SUGGESTING A LOW-COST, USER-DEVELOPED CORRECTION ALGORITHM FOR CRITICAL CHARACTERISTIC MEASUREMENT.
