AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO THE DESIGN, ANALYSIS, AND MAKING OF MOLDS FOR INJECTION MOLDED PLASTIC SPUR GEARS WAS DEVELOPED USING A SOLID MODELING CAD DATABASE AND A PERSONAL COMPUTER BASED CAM PACKAGE. THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF THE GEARS AND MOLDS WERE PERFORMED USING THE SDRC I-DEAS SOLID MODELING SOFTWARE PACKAGE. FORTRAN PROGRAMS WERE DEVELOPED TO CREATE PROGRAM FILES TO CREATE THE SOLID MODELS OF THE GEAR AND MOLD COMPONENTS. A CAM SOFTWARE PACKAGE WAS USED TO DEVELOP THE CNC CODE TO MACHINE THE MOLD. THE MOLD WAS MACHINED ON A FIVE-AXIS CNC VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER. THE MOLD WAS TO WORK VERY WELL ON THE MOLDING MACHINE.
