WALKING ROBOTS HAVE THE ABILITY TO TRAVERSE TERRAIN THAT IS OFTEN IMPASSABLE TO THEIR WHEELED AND TRACKED COUNTERPARTS. A CRITICAL REQUIREMENT FOR LEGGED MACHINES IS THE ABILITY TO ESTABLISH AND SUSTAIN DESIRED GROUND CONTACTS. THE CMU ROBOTICS INSTITUTE HAS CONFIGURED A WALKING ROBOT, AMBLER, DESIGNED TO EXPLORE RUGGED, NATURAL TERRAIN. THE GROUP HAS UNDERTAKEN A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMS. ONE WHICH EXAMINES TRACTIVE FORCES UNDER A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS IS PRESENTED HERE.
