THERMAL DIFFUSION IS A SURFACE MODIFICATION PROCESS THAT FORMS A VANADIUM CARBIDE LAYER ON THE SURFACE OF STEELS AND CARBIDES. THIS VANADIUM CARBIDE LAYER IS METALLURGICALLY BONDED INTO AND ONTO THE SURFACE OF THE SUBSTRATE. THESE TREATED SURFACES SHOW A HARDNESS IN THE RANGE OF 3,200 TO 3,800 ON THE VICKERS HARDNESS SCALE. DOCUMENTED CASE HISTORIES HAVE SHOWN TD-PROCESSED COMPONENTS TO HAVE AN EXTENDED LIFE OF UP TO 50 OR 60 TIMES LONGER THAN UNTREATED COMPONENTS. THE PROCESS HAS BEEN USED ON TOOLING AND DIES IN THE SHEET METAL, COLD FORGING, ROLL FORMING AND WIRE INDUSTRIES.
