THIS PAPER DESCRIBES ONE APPROACH TO CREATING DISTRIBUTED REAL-TIME CONTROL SYSTEMS COMBINING WIDELY USED COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS AND STANDARD OPERATING SYSTEM SOFTWARE (UNIX). THIS PAPER DISCUSSES: REAL-TIME CONTROL IN INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION; THE DUAL ROLE OF COMMUNICATIONS IN RUN-TIME SYSTEM AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT; THE UNIX-REAL RELATIONSHIP, AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE VXWORKS REAL-TIME OPERATING SYSTEM AS AN EXAMPLE OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATING COMMUNICATIONS AND REAL-TIME CONTROL.
