THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF A MACHINE SHOP SIMULATION MODEL TO ANALYZE WORK LOAD THAT IS CREATED BY A MULTITUDE OF PLANNED AND UNPLANNED VARIABLES IN AN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE WAS TO PROVIDE AN INFORMATION TOOL TO MANAGE WORK LOAD IN THE MACHINE SHOP IN A JUST-IN-TIME ENVIRONMENT. THE SIMULATION MODEL PROVIDED BOTH SHORT- AND LONG-TERM ANALYSIS. THE SHORT- TERM ANALYSIS WAS USED TO EVALUATE OVERTIME NEEDS AND MANPOWER REQUIREMENTS. THE LONG TERM ANALYSIS ASSISTED IN MAKING CRITICAL MAKE/BUY DECISIONS AND IN PLANNING OF RESOURCES FOR FUTURE NEEDS.
