THIS PAPER COMPARES FRAME-BASED AND CONTINUOUS VISION AND DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN IDEAL CONTINUOUS VISION PROCESSOR. CONTINUOUS VISION APPLICATIONS REQUIRE REAL-TIME PROCESSING OF VERY WIDE, INFINITELY LONG LINE SCAN IMAGES. FRAME-BASED VISION SYSTEMS HAVE FUNDAMENTAL LIMITATIONS THAT RENDER THEM UNSATISFACTORY FOR THESE APPLICATIONS. CONTINUOUS VISION APPLICATIONS REQUIRE A CONTINUOUS VISION PROCESSOR CAPABLE OF PERFORMING SOPHISTICATED PROCESSING ON CONTINUOUS LINE SCAN IMAGES IN REAL-TIME.
