As stated by Rolstadas, a virtual manufacturing company consists of a number of units geographically dispersed but managed as one total unit although the sub-units may be under separate management. To be lean, agile and global, many manufacturing industries, particularly One-of-a-Kind Production (OKP) industries, are moving to the virtual manufacturing companies. However, traditional production control and management methods and theories do not handle this new situation well. This paper presents a framework for real-time production planning and control (PPC) in a virtual OKP company. Within this framework, a dynamic control structure supported by a virtual production control concept and an adaptive production scheduling system are proposed.
