In many manufacturing plants today there is a lack of the hard knowledge and direct measurements needed to determine what is really occurring during the production process. This lack of knowledge often is a result of infrequent part sampling, or because the process is too fast to be measured or not easily seen by the human eye. There is a real need to measure the product on-line in real-time to determine if the product meets written specifications, and to calculate statistics, observe trends and uncover potential problems before they occur. In addition, there is a need for accurate and complete measurements and statistics to improve the process and product over time.
