The growth in the use of the Internet has been truly astounding in all measurable dimensions. This paper describes the characteristics of the relevant popular formats such as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) for images, CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) for 2D drawings and VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) for 3D data. The paper identifies sources for free and commercially available plug-in viewers for these formats compatible with industry leading browsers and details their viewing, markup and hyperlink capabilities. This paper also discusses the technological advances that will address the major remaining obstacles to expanded use of the Internet such as limited bandwidth, security issues and concerns about employee misuse.
