A model is developed to predict workpiece location and orientation errors due to fixturing on datum planes that contain surface errors. The model is valid for the 3-2-1 fixturing method for prismatic workpieces and uses the tolerances on the datum surfaces as the surface error input. The maximum deviation of a workpiece which satisfies the flatness and perpendicularity tolerances on the datum planes is calculated. An example is presented.
