The design engineer interested in reverse engineering a three dimensional (3D) object from unique data sets such as computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) image data is particularly concerned with time, cost, accuracy, and conversion problems. This paper overviews the ability to acquire planer data sets and interface with rapid prototyping technology. Examples of actual parts that have been reconstructed from CT image data are presented
