This practice specifies standard definition (BT.601-5) video materials that are available at reproduction and administrative cost from SMPTE for use in evaluating digital television technology and processing.

It describes the attributes of the materials, which have made them valuable in systems evaluation. Such description is not intended to suggest these materials may not be valuable in other aspects of evaluation.

It describes, to the extent they are known, the conditions under which the materials were captured and the post-processing which was applied. The materials were originally archived in D-1 tape format.

Materials are separately available in 525-line and 625-line digital video standards. The materials are archived on digital data media. Distribution is designed to provide consistent, high quality delivery of the materials.
