This standard addresses universal design of housing and adjacent common outdoor areas, and is primarily intended for planners and designers. “Adjacent common outdoor areas” are defined as developed outdoor areas designated for parking and access roads. To achieve universally designed housing, the directives in this standard must be followed. A dwelling unit including common areas that has a quality of use which complies with this standard's directives can thus be classified as a universally-designed dwelling unit. To achieve universally-designed outdoor areas, the standard can be used with regard to access routes and parking. The standard specifies what is necessary for compliance with requirements for universal design and equitable use. The aim of the standard is to specify the design requirements which will ensure increased user safety and quality for all.
