The purpose of the standard is to reduce the risk for escape because of technical failure and wrong use of the fish farming installation. The standard describes requirements for physical design of marine fish farming installations, and how the physical design is to be documented. This also includes calculation and planning rules for such installations. The standard indicates which parameters are to be used to indicate the natural condition of a given locality, as well as the method of classification of localities. Requirements for physical design include requirements for all main components the installation consists of, that is to say cage net, moorings, floater, barges and any auxiliary equipment, as well as requirements for functionality after the main components are assembled into a complete fish farming installation. A description is given of how requirements for a complete installation together with its main components shall be placed in relation to the natural conditions at the given locality. The standard also describes requirements as to how an installation shall be operated in order to achieve acceptable escape protection.
