This Technical Information Paper (TIP) provides guidelines for achieving an acceptable level of weld quality in field application of pin studs in black liquor recovery boilers. Owners and applicators may agree to modify these guidelines as they deem necessary and reasonable in order to more closely meet the needs of their particular situation. This document is divided into two sections: the first covers the welding of pin studs (or studding) on bare tubes (see NBIC Code Chapter III, Supplement 1 Examples of Repairs and Alterations B.2.a.), the second covers studding on existing studs or nubbins (which is not subject to ASME Code requirements).
