This Technical Information Paper provides guidelines for testing the quality of boiler tube butt welds
using an ultrasonic shear wave testing method. This UT method is an alternative to more traditional, radiographic testing (RT).
Procedures and requirements are described to properly qualify the equipment and personnel to affect this
type of UT. This method can be applied to butt welds in boiler tubes of any material commonly used in power
and recovery boilers in pulp and paper mills.
