This standard defines the electrical requirements and telephony aspects (e.g., DTMF and call progress tones) of the 1544 kbps interface of packet-based gateways for connection to Public Switching Telephone Networks (PSTN) or private enterprise networks. Other interfaces (e.g., LAN interface) for connection to IP or packet-based network are outside the scope of this standard.
Compliance with this standard is determined at the packet-based gateway 1544 kbps interface boundary and is not to be construed as a constraint on the internal coding or switching techniques of the packetbased gateway.
The requirements in this standard ensure compatibility of packet-based gateway with the 1544 kbps interface parameters specified in ANSI/TIA-464-C-2002, PBX switching equipment (Ref 1) and ANSI T1.403-1991, DS1 Electrical Interface (Ref 2).
The packet-based gateway with 1544 kbps interface is referred to as the packet-based gateway within this standard.
