This Standard states the construction, test, and marking requirements covering the safety of electrical and electrical/optical-fiber cables intended for 150-volt and
lower-potential non-power-limited circuits that are controlled and powered by a fire-alarm system. These cables are for installation in buildings as specified in Article
760 and other applicable parts of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70. These cables are not power-limited so 760-30(b)(1) of NFPA 70-1996 states
that these cables are not to be exposed where installed in environmental-air-transport ducts or plenums. These cables typically are red in color. Electrically
nonconductive material separates each optical-fiber member from the rest of the cable. The order in which the NEC accepts these cables as substitutes for one
another is shown in (d).
1.PLENUM CABLES - Type NPLFP (electrical) and Type NPLFP-OF (electrical/optical-fiber). These cables are for exposed installation in other [NEC
300-22(c)] environmental-air-transport space.
2.RISER CABLES - Type NPLFR (electrical) and Type NPLFR-OF (electrical/optical-fiber). These cables are for installation in vertical runs in a shaft or for
installation in vertical runs that penetrate more than one floor.
3.GENERAL-PURPOSE CABLES - Type NPLF (electrical) and Type NPLF-OF (electrical/optical-fiber). These cables are for general-purpose fire-alarm
use in buildings. General purpose does not include use as plenum or riser cable.
4.HIERARCHY:
1.Type NPLFP qualifies for use as Type NPLFR or NPLF.
2.Type NPLFP-OF qualifies for use as Type NPLFR-OF or NPLF-OF.
3.Type NPLFR qualifies for use as Type NPLF.
4.Type NPLFR-OF qualifies for use as Type NPLF-OF.
