The requirements in this standard apply to a low-voltage landscape lighting system and components that may consist of a power unit, wiring, and luminaire. This standard only covers equipment where the maximum output of each secondary circuit is 25 A, 15 V ac (21.2 V peak) open circuit voltage, 300 VA. The equipment is intended to be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.

The luminaires covered by this standard are intended for garden, walkway, patio areas, or similar outdoo r locations and for certain indoor locations such as atriums and shopping malls. The power units may be installe d indoors or outdoors in accordance with the marking on the product (see 4.3).

Fluorescent and hi gh intensity discharge lighting systems will be investigated in accordance with the applicable requirements in this standard and with the a pplicable requirements in the Standard for Fluorescent Lighting Fixtures, UL 1570, and the Standard for High Intensity Discharge Lighting Fixtures, UL 1572, as appropriate.

The Standard does not contain requirements for power units that employ electronic circuit to reduce the voltage to the secondary. In addition to the requirements contained in this Standard, the power units employing such a circuit shall also comply with the Standard for Isolated Power Systems, UL 1047.

A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those in use when the Standard was developed, and that involves a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to mai ntain the level of safety for the user of the product as originally anticipated by the intent of this Standard.
