These requirements cover signaling devices intended for emergency or non-emergency use, used in indoor and/or outdoor locations, and where applicable, installed
and used in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.
Emergency-signaling products covered by these requirements are categorized as indicated below, are associated with property and/or life safety and are of a
non-fire/non-security alarm nature. These products are evaluated with regard to product safety and to appropriateness of signaling.
- Type UM (User-Monitored) devices or systems are intended to be monitored and tested by the user. These devices are intended for household use or are
personal signaling devices carried by the user.
- Type SM (Self-Monitored) devices or systems are intended to be self-monitoring. These devices are intended for, but not restricted to, commercial use.
- Type AM (Attendant-Monitored) devices or systems are intended to be constantly operated and maintained by competent and experienced personnel, either
locally or at a remote station.
- Residential Water Hazard entrance alarms are devices or systems intended to be installed on gates, doors, or access barriers surrounding residential swimming
pools, spas, or hot tubs for the purpose of sounding an audible alarm due to unauthorized entry into these areas.
Non-emergency-signaling products covered by these requirements are categorized as Type NM (Non-Monitored), are not associated with property and/or life
safety, and are only evaluated relative to product safety.
