The stipulations of this standard apply to steel bolts (fastening threads with a 60° flank angle) in highly stressed and high-strength bolted joints – in other words, for strength grades 8.8 to 12.9 or 70 and 80 – and with a frictional transmission of the working load which in all cases is introduced via the clamped components. This usually consists of a static or dynamic axial force (that is, the direction of action is parallel to the bolt axis). In addition, bending moments and transverse forces may be present.
The tabular values are given for the dimension range M4 to M39. The standard may be applied by analogy to bolts made of other materials, in the case of lower strength or strength differing from the strength grades according to DIN EN ISO 898-1. The same applies to bolts of larger dimensions.
The standard applies to a limited size of the contact areas at the inner interfaces (dimension G, see Section 5.1.2.2). If this limiting value is exceeded, the specified relationships no longer apply, or a larger calculation error occurs.
The material properties based on the Tables A1 to A4, A6, A7, A9, A11 and A12 apply only at room temperature, i. e. appropriate allowance must be made for their temperature dependence at lower and higher temperatures. Extreme stresses (e. g. corrosion), sudden and stochastic loads are not treated.
This standard does not in principle do away with the need for experimental and/or numerical (FEM) tests for verifying the calculation results. These are particularly advisable in the case of critical joints. For information in this regard, see VDI 2230 Part 2
This standard does not cover the determination of external loading.
