This standard applies to the determination and application of “characteristic water consumption values” for all buildings and real properties including open areas (according to the building classification catalogue, see VDI 3807 Part 2) which are supplied with water. These characteristic water consumption values can be derived from metered values, calculated and/or determined using the guidance in this standard or using VDI 6024 Part 1.

For the purposes of this standard, the term “water” shall be taken to denote drinking water as per the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV).

Other types of water (service water, stormwater, greywater) are to be considered when applying this procedure; where required, they can be treated in a manner analogous to that described in this standard.
