This standard deals with stresses acting on an elastomer that are due to the physical and chemical exposure to media and their constituents (such as additives).
Physical media exposure will not lead to a chemical reaction of the medium or its additives with the polymer matrix, with the cross-links, or with other constituents of the elastomer material (such as plasticizers, antioxidants, fillers, and processing aids). Typical consequences are reversible phenomena such as swelling (increase in volume) or shrinkage due to elution. These can, in turn, lead to changes in physical/mechanical properties.
Chemical media exposure involves a chemical reaction between the medium, and/or its additives and the elastomer and thus an irreversible change in the elastomer’s properties. The scope of this standard is restricted to fluid media including acids and bases and includes gases with the exception of ozone and oxygen (see also VDI 3822 Part 2.2.7 and Part 2.2.9).
The information in this standard are intended solely as a basic framework. Variations between elastomers particularly depend on their intended uses as well as on the applicable material specifications and the tolerances they allow for the individual elastomer products according to the application they were manufactured for.
