The series of standards VDI 6022 applies to any occupied space (see Section 3) in buildings.

This standard applies to all ventilation and air-conditioning systems and units and their central or decentralised components which influence the quality of the supply air.

Extract-air systems are only included in the scope if they can influence the quality of the supply air. The objective also applies to process-air systems (for the purposes of this standard, systems which are used as a measure to comply with the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance (GefStoffV) or the German Biological Agents Ordinance (BioStoffV)). However, the specifics regarding the design, the checking of the hygienic condition and the specification of the reference air as well as process-specific emissions in the context of legal rules and regulations are to be observed.

With a view to the hygiene requirements, the standard gives guidance on planning, installation, maintenance, and operation and describes test procedures and test criteria for ventilation and air-conditioning systems and units.
