The standard is applicable to buildings constructed from room units with a planned duration of use of five years or less. The limitation of the duration of use of the buildings has its origin in the Energy Saving Ordinance (current version of 2009).

The life cycle of the room units to be used for this purpose is designed to last for longer periods up to 20 years.

The size of the buildings is variable, ranging from one room unit to buildings consisting of many room units which can be arranged over several storeys. Such buildings constructed from industrially manufactured room units with steel frame require harmonised rules that take account of the design-inherent specifics in conjunction with the applicable building regulations. This means, e.g., special requirements regarding stability, building physics, energy efficiency, and dismantling.

The applications of buildings constructed from room units are multifarious, e.g.:

• kindergartens and schools

• office and administration buildings

• hospitals

• buildings for accommodation

• control rooms during major events (sports, theatre, concerts)

• banks

• sales and presentation buildings

• construction-site buildings

• workshops

• laboratories

A typical example is shown in Figure 1.

Use-related regulations shall be observed irrespective of the construction of the buildings. Given the standardised manufacture of the room units and their reusability for different uses, this shall be given particular consideration during planning.

This standard is not applicable to temporary structures as per M-FlBauR (standard on the construction and operation of temporary structures). The use of room units is different from temporary structures in that various configurations can be realised at each new assembly. Temporary structures are installed at various locations, but always in the same manner.
