This standard shall be used when designing touchscreen-specific dialogues for technical plants in industrial applications. The design recommendations given in this standard focus mainly on the operation of touchscreens using fingers; operation using other touch elements (pen/stylus, glove, prosthesis device, etc.) is possible if appropriate hardware is installed – see Section 5. The design of safety-relevant functions for touchscreen systems is not dealt with here since only very few such functions have been approved for touchscreen systems up to now.

The standard provides rules and recommendations for the design of dialogues for touchscreens used in stationary applications. The design requirements on touchscreen-based systems for use in mobile applications (e. g. handheld devices) differ in some ways and these shall be dealt with in another part of this series of standards.

The present standard supports developers of user interfaces in the design of touchscreen-specific dialogues while giving them sufficient creative freedom to develop their own independent solutions.
