Past extensive research on weldability and fracture of weldments has been accompanied by development of numerous test specimens. In the time period when as-rolled carbon steels were of greatest interest, specimens designed to measure toughness of base plate only were found appropriate for use since failures in carbon steel weldments commonly took plate paths. At the same time, available tough weld metals and proper welding control eliminated the weld metal and heat-affected zone as major concerns. However, the introduction and use of higher strength heat-treated steels have demonstrated the need for awareness of weldability and fracture problems in the total composite of weld metal, heat-affected zone and plate material. Hence there has developed need for an appropriate test specimen and procedure applicable to the total composite weldment providing the opportunity for failure in any area. The purpose of this report is to describe a specimen applicable to this need and to present data to determine whether the proposed specimen, the Delta, allows failures to follow least resistant paths because of specimen geometry and loading system. It is not the purpose to recommend materials, welding procedures or processes though it has been necessary to study many of these in a wide variety of combinations to determine their influences on behavior of the specimen.
