This is the final report of a PVRC-sponsored, 1.5-year program to characterize hydrogen embrittlement of austenitic stainless steel weld metals. Earlier reports of this program are cited as Refs. 1-5. Formulas and constants to facilitate conversion of quantities expressed in U.S. practical units and c.g.s. units in this report into SI units are listed in Table 1.

Austenitic stainless steel weld metals are preferred cladding materials for the protection of pressure vessels operated at elevated temperatures. Materials technology development is currently active in the area of vessels for petroleum processing and coal conversion. These applications are characterized by environments containing high proportions of hydrogen (H?) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at elevated temperatures. The structural materials of the pressure vessels are usually carbon- and low-alloy Cr-Mo steels selected on the basis of operating experience as summarized in such forms as the "Nelson curves." The preferred protective cladding materials are austenitic stainless steel weld metals of Types 308, 309, 310, 321 and 347.
