Short pipes and axial members are used as energy dissipating devices in Pipe-Whip Restraints. Quantitative characterization of the load-deformation behavior of these members is necessary for a proper modeling of the whip restraints for an engineering design analysis. Experimental load deformation behaviors are reported for 15 pipe specimens, made of two different carbon steel and representing diameter to thickness ratios of 13.5 and 20.2. Various constraint conditions representative of a whip restraint were considered. Similar results for three different short compression members with slenderness ratios of 7 and 16.9 and made of carbon steel are also presented. Method of obtaining modeling parameter for fine element analysis is discussed.
