It has been shown that the presence of a viscous fluid can have a significant effect on the dynamic response of circular coaxial concentric cylinders.

Many authors have shown that an added mass or inertia coefficient frequency domain solution can be used successfully for many practical design and analysis purposes.

This study presents the development of the concept of inertia and damping coefficients in an historical context with experimental, classical, and numerical investigations into the dynamics of fluid coupled cylinders. It is shown that coefficients may be used to account for coaxial cylinder end conditions, eccentricity, skewness, clusters, shell modes and axial modes.

Illustrative problems are presented that compare fluid coupled cylinder experimental and theoretical natural frequency and seismic results. Au-Yang's modal selection rule, the frequency summation formula of Levin and Milan, the axial coefficient concept, and damping coefficient are illustrated through the experimental versus theoretical comparisons. The use of the damping formula with linear finite element dynamic analysis is discussed.
