The purpose of this report is to provide the infrequent user of flow-induced vibration (FIV) with enough background that he can effectively use the appropriate standard, design simple heat exchangers that are free of vibration and effectively investigate FIV problems that arise. Publication of this report - WRC Bulletin No. 372 was sponsored by the Committee on Dynamic Analysis and Testing of the Pressure Vessel Research Council.

The design of heat exchangers is usually covered by appropriate standards that deal in varying degrees with flow-induced vibration (FTV). Some heat exchangers are governed by TEMA standards and some by the ASME Code where new guidelines are being proposed. The purpose of this report is to provide the infrequent user of FIV with enough background that he can effectively use the appropriate standard, design simple heat exchangers that are free of vibration and effectively investigate FIV problems that arise. The nature of today's industry is shifting from manufacturing to service, so it is anticipated that much of the application of this technology will be in maintaining and improving the serviceability of existing equipment.

The objective of this report, in support of the above stated purpose, is to provide the infrequent user of FIV technology with a current understanding of:

1. The mechanisms that cause FIV

2. The available methods for predicting FIV

3. An acceptance criteria that assures a safe design.
