Bolted flanged connections with full-face gaskets are not covered by ASME Code, Section VIII, Division 1 rules. A proposal for such rules was presented to the Welding Research Council, covering full-face gasketed bolted flanged connections in identical pairs only. This paper reviews the behavior of gaskets and flanges for such connections and shows how the method for identical pairs can be modified to include dissimilar pairs such as flanges of different thickness, reducing flanges and flanged covers.
The proposed method is similar to the method used in the present Section VIII, Division 1 rules for bolted flanged connections with ring gaskets. Equations are developed and numerical examples are provided. Limited correlations with experimental data from strain gage measurements are given.
