This is the final report of a project performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to integrate information generated in the U.S.S.R. on residual stresses and distortion in welded structures. The idea of undertaking this project was originated during the International Conference on Welding Construction held in September 1990 at the E. O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, Kiev, to commemorate the 120th Birthday Anniversary of the late Academician E. O. Paton, the founder of the Paton Institute. Dr. Leonid M. Lobanov, Deputy Director of the Paton Institute, was one of organizers of the Conference, while Professor Koichi Masubuchi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Mr. Richard D. French, Deputy Executive Director of the American Welding Society were among the guests from the United States. Both Dr. Lobanov and Professor Masubuchi head groups engaged in research on residual stresses and distortion in welded structures. Dr. Lobanov, Professor Masubuchi, and Mr. French agreed to develop a document that integrates technical information generated in U.S.S.R. on residual stresses and distortion in welded structures. The document should be useful for engineers in the Western World who have little access to the technical information generated in the Eastern World, especially the former U.S.S.R. In order the facilitate the cooperative work, the Paton Institute sent Dr. Victor I. Pavlovsky, a senior staff scientist, to M.I.T. as a visiting engineer from November 1991 through May 1992. The American Welding-Society agreed to provide Dr. Pavlovsky with living expenses within the United States. This document has been prepared as a final report of cooperative activities between M.I.T. and the Paton Institute.
