This report summarises the results of a substantial screening programme set up at BRE to investigate the susceptibility of five series of mortars to the thaumasite form of attack. Studies are still continuing but the report recommends that Portland limestone cements manufactured to BS 7583 should not be used in sulfate conditions above class 1.
