Introduction

The objective of the CONREPNET thematic network launched in Madrid in February 2003 was to achieve improvement in the performance of remediated concrete structures. It has sought to do this by looking at past, present and future circumstances relating to the protection and repair of concrete structures. The network was sponsored by the European Commission under its Framework Programme 5. The audience for the outcomes of the network is expected to be not only those ‘professionally' involved in the remediation of concrete structures, that is engineers, repair specialists and material suppliers, but also informed owners. The latter group, who probably control portfolios of structures, is perhaps the most important of all the stakeholders because they essentially set the requirements for the others.
