Fatalities continue to be associated with working on roofs. This Information Paper reports the findings of a committee of roofing experts who have examined HSE data and case studies on accidents with a view to establishing the design decision which led to the underlying cause of the accident. Falls from height are often due to falls through fragile roofs or rooflights, but materials that are non-fragile when installed may become fragile over time. Falls from the edges of roofs may be avoided by better design of buildings and better training of workers. This paper is aimed primarily at architects and designers of roofs but is also relevant to anyone working on roof construction including material suppliers and installers.
