Purpose

This regulation establishes policies and procedures to insure that—

a. All mission-essential Army materiel is considered for hardening against initial nuclear weapon effects. Policies concerning residual nuclear effects are addressed in AR 70-71.

b. Nuclear hardening is addressed early in the acquisition cycle.

c. Reasonable mission-related survivability criteria are applied to all mission-essential materiel.

d. System nuclear hardening requirements, once established, are applied and maintained throughout the life cycle of the system.

Applicability. This regulation applies to the Active Army and to all proponent agencies of research, development, test, and evaluation; acquisition; logistical support; product improvement; doctrine; and training. It does not apply to the Army National Guard or the US Army Reserve.
