The optimization of disinfection application for achieving effective disinfection, as governed by the requirements of the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR), while minimizing disinfection byproducts is a major concern for treatment facilities. Numerous water disinfection studies have observed deviations from Chick Watson Law, and therefore the CT tables provided by SWTR. Some of the modifications of the Chick Watson Law incorporate explicit dependence on initial microbial density (N0) and this dependency has never been directly tested. In this study, two series of bench scale disinfection experiments using Escherichia coli and Giardia muris were performed with preformed monochloramine and ozone as disinfectant, respectively. Theinitial microbial densities ranged approximately 160 fold and 11 fold for E. coli and G. muris experiments, respectively. Kinetic analysis showed that inactivation kinetics are best described by the Hom Power Law for inactivation of E. coli experiments and by the Power Law for G. muris experiments. Both of the best fit models include N0 as predictor. The CT plots for 99%inactivation developed by these best fit models help to visually demonstrate that the disinfection efficiency increases as initial microbial density increases. Includes 20 references, tables, figures.
