This paper overviews cost summary tables for advanced technologies and presents examples of cost-effective advanced treatment options, in the anticipation of new regulations and increased customer expectations. The Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproduct Rule, the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, and the Stage 2 Microbial/Disinfection Byproducts Rule requirements and related increasing concerns about Cryptosporidium and other pathogenic microorganisms, have resulted in increased implementation and testing of advanced water treatment technologies. Several cost-effective advanced technologies used for compliance with these regulations are discussed in this paper and include: chloramination; granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption; ozonation; microfiltration/ultrafiltration; and, ultraviolet light disinfection. Various cost comparison tables from the US Environmental Protection Agency and other publications are cited below for relative comparison of the alternate technologies. Includes tables.
