As of 1996, 57% of Canadian municipalities had not installed water meters. One reason for not installing water meters given by water managers in nonmetered communities is that meters do not reduce water use or, if reductions occur initially, then water use will increase again after a year or two. This paper examines water use in metered compared to nonmetered communities in Canada. It uses data from a national survey covering 24.6 million people in 1,358 municipalities across Canada including the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The results show that metered communities use 34% less water than nonmetered communities. The paper examines the impacts of metering in the various regions of Canada as well as the impacts in various sizes of municipalities. Includes reference, figures, appendix.
