The City of San Antonio, Texas, is the largest municipality in the United States that is solely dependent on groundwater as its drinking water source. Environmental studies have indicated that regional withdrawals from the Edwards Aquifer can reduce spring flows from the aquifer and potentially harm several endangered species during extreme drought situations. Consequently, in 1995, the State of Texas formed a groundwater regulatory authority that has mandated that current withdrawals from theaquifer must be reduced. Therefore, the City of San Antonio must find alternative water supplies to reduce their existing water use from the aquifer, as well as to provide for future growth. As the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) staff began planning for new supplies, they recognized early that the potential exists for major water quality impacts when new water sources with different chemistries are introduced into their distribution system. To address these fears, SAWS initiated a Multiple Source Integration Study, which is a comprehensive analysis of the impacts that the new water sources might have on the City's distribution system. The program methodology and approach is presented in this paper to serve as a road map for otherutilities planning to integrate new water sources. At this time, the project has developed preliminary results, and it is anticipated that the detailed testing protocol, analytical methods, and final results will be published at future technical conferences. Includes reference, table, figures.
