This presentation focuses on describing low cost methods for assessing the condition of
aboveground infrastructure elements such as concrete structures (storage basins, clearwells, filter
boxes, water conduits, buildings), steel structural systems (pipe supports, pipe support frames),
and aboveground piping. The papers reviews the instruments, techniques, and standards currently
used for condition assessment. These include: visual examination, sounding with masonry
hammers, pachometers, chloride ion sampling, depth of carbonation, petrographic evaluation,
half cell potential, Windsor Probe, pit depth gauges, micrometer measurements, and ultrasonic
testing (A and B Scans).
