The 1990s brought to the utility industry a potpourri of trenchless construction methodologies that included horizontal directional drilling (HDD), microtunneling, pipe bursting, and a myriad of pipe rehabilitation techniques. Not all owners have embraced these new technologies. Reluctant to compromise on the quality, reliability, and structural integrity of their pipelines many owners have been waiting for a ductile iron pipe solution. This paper discusses case histories where owners have successfully utilized conventional "bell-spigot" as well as "bell-less" ductile iron pipe joints for installation by trenchless methods.
