A costing summary for 20 slow sand filtration facilities and 5 ceramic media pressure filtration facilities in the New England region was completed. The principal independent variables included total construction costs, construction costs normalized by filter area and design capacity, total operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, and O&M costs normalized per 1,000 gal treated. Overall, there was a good correlation between slow sand filter area and design capacity as expected. Moreover, construction costs increased exponentially with design capacity and filter area. O&M costs were highly variable but appeared to be independent of slow sand filter cleaning methods. O&M costs for ceramic media filtration were limited. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
