The City of North Miami Beach is considered a leader in municipal water
conservation efforts in South Florida. North Miami Beach's water conservation
program provides the utility with more efficient development of alternative water
supplies and low unaccounted for water loss. In addition, the city's conservation
program provides for better peak demand dampening and more efficient
drought/water shortage mitigation. Balancing water supply sustainability and
revenue stability are both primary considerations in the development of future
water conservation initiatives in North Miami Beach. Topics discussed in this paper include: water resource issues in southeast Florida; water conservation and supply development; partnerships; financial, operational and legislative initiatives; and, water education and outreach initiatives.
